La Vaqueria

Monday Feb 14th was the first day of Spanish classes in Merida for the Saratoga students.

The Spanish grammar, conversational Spanish, Culture and literature teachers were all prepare to receive their students.

At the institute all of our teachers were surprised to se how much the kids already know and how well they all behave in the classroom, someone in Saratoga is doing a good JOB!! "These kids are exceptional and it is a pleasure to work with them", Lucelly, our culture teacher said at the end of the day.

After classes the group went back to their host families for "el almuerzo" (comida/main meal of theday) and we all met at down town at 7:30PM for the show "La Vaqueria", a regional show that we have as part of the City of Merida Cultur program. The show is a representation of the old festivities we had in the Yucatan during the 1800 to celebrate the branding and counting of the cows and after the haciendas had the year´s harvest done. With this celebrations our typical dance took form "La Jarana"

1.- Ayer, lunes, fuimos a la plaza principal para miramos la vaqueria. Fue en frente del ayuntamiento. Hay muchas personas en la plaza y los calles. Había un baile de cultural de Yucatán. Se llama la Jaraña. En la baile había muchos chicos y chicas en la ropa tradicional y genial.

2.- Nos gustamos ver el baile. Los chicos en un baile pusieron en sus cabezas botallas crystales con agua y cervezas. Y nos gustamos el helado del heladería tambien.

3.- Vistamos un mujer loca y borracha, ella bail´o con los bailarinos durante los bailes.

4.- Nosotros aprendimos también que las chicas llevaron vestidos muy bonitos con muchos colores, y los chicos llevaron ropas blancas con sombrero blanco.

LA VAQUERIA

Vimos la vaquería ayer en el centro de mercado. Nos gusta mejor el baile de los Maya con las botellas en la cabeza. Vimos los bailarines que bailaron la jarana. Vimos una mujer loca que grite mucho.

Aprendimos sobre de los vestidos de la mujer de los Maya. Tambien aprendimos mas del culturo de los Maya. En el vestido de las mujeres tuvieron muchos flores con muchos colores. Tambien las mujeres llevaran oro y zapatillios blanco. El pelo de las mujeres fue en un chongo con muchos flores. Los mujeres se maquillaron mucho. Los hombres llevaron los trajes blancos y llevaron sombreros blancos. Los bailarines eran muy jovenes y eran muy feliz.

Merida en Domingo

Sunday morning we visited the Merida Historical center "La Plaza Grande"Every Sunday the city promotes the local culture with a program "Mérida en Domingo"

femilies have the opportunity to visit the down town area and walk around without any cars because the main streets are close to traffic.

Mérida en Domingo is an open market where yo can find hand crafts and food, there are also groups playing and singing music.

We also had the city tour and learned about the City with a guided tour.

Ayer fuimos a la Plaza Grande, a un programa que se llama "Mérida en Domingo". Visitamos la Casa del Gobierno y vimos muchos murales de José Pacheco. Habían murales sobre la historia de los Mayas. Después fuimos a la Catedral, pero había personas que estaban asistiendo a la misa. También visitamos la casa del conquistador Montejo, caminamos en la plaza y compramos muchas artesanías . Andubimos en Autobús y montamos en lo que vimos unas casas bonitísimas, unos edificios y unos monumentos.

Regresamos al parque de colonia Alemán y esperamos por nuestras familias. También habían unos actores quien estaban actuando la obra de la "Sirena pequeña" y fué muy cómica. En la tarde fuimos al centro comercial "Altabrisa" y miramos unas películas como "el peleador", el "templo de Acero", y "la esposa de mentira". Regresamos a las casas a las ocho o nueve de la noche.

Día en Mérida

Cuando llegamos al central de Mérida, nosotros nos gusto el mercado y la comida, especialmente los churros. Nos encanto la musica que estaba en frente de la iglesia. Nosotros aprendimos revajar el precio con los vendadores y sobre los edificios del gobierno. También, aprendimos sobre los pinturas del edificio y sus historias. Los sombreros grandes, pulseras, ponchos, collares, rebozo, y anillos eran muy bonitos y nos gusto mucho. Fue muy divertido en el centro porque todos de los amigos estaban juntos en el mercado. También, los vendedores eran muy amables y graciosos. El mercado de Mérida era muy bonito y hacía buen tiempo. Nos gustó mucho el mercado.

Chichen Itzá and Cenote Ik-Kil, Sat, Feb. 12th

Modern World Wonder Chichen Itza and the Saratoga High students, what rain?

We visited "El Castillo" and went swimming in a Cenote "Ik-Kil"

CHICHEN ITZA

Saludos desde Mérida,

El sábado pasado fuimos a Chichen Itza (Chicken Pizza).

Fue un lugar muy bonita, especial, y interesante. Nunca habíamos visto algo tan antigua y bonito. En este país nos gustan las pirámides de los Mayans. Es muy interesante la historia y la cultura de los Mayans.

Aprendimos que había sacrificios de niños a los dioses en las pirámides. Para ellos, un sacrificio es un gran honor, era graciosa que tenemos trajes de baños y pantalones cortos porque pensamos que iríamos a la playa este día !!pero los planes cambió porque estaba lloviendo! Era comico porque compramos ponchos! y no fueron preparados para este tiempo. Aunque estuvo lloviendo nos divirtimos.

Vimos muchos pyramidos grandes y queríamos subirnos pero no podíamos. Estaba lloviendo mucho. Caminamos al Cenote sagrado y tomamos muchas fotografías. había gente añña que estaba vendiendo cosas de artesanías y que estaban de maderas. Despues nadamos en el cenote. Era muy bonito y había muchos raíces que estaban tocando el agua. Luego fuimos a una hacienda para comer. Comemos comida de México. tomamos el autobus para regresar a las nuestras casas.

ORIENTATION DAY

SALSA, COOKING AND USEFUL INFORMATION FOR THE KIDS.

During the orientation day we reviewed the group's itinerary, talked about the classes and made sure everyone knew what to expect about the trips.

After that, the kids were divided into groups to take turns for Salsa and cooking workshops. As it rained, we were not able to swim at the pool or play soccer as scheduled but that did not stopped us from having lots of fun!!

Everyone loved Rossie, the Institute's Pet and we made a Mayan Fruit Salad that is a tradition in this area and we call SCHECK

Today the group is going to Chichen Itza. We have a little bit of clouds and chances of little rain, so we decided it was a nice day to visit Chichen Itza and left Celestún and the beach for next Saturday.

We will have lots of pictures of Chicehn Itza when the group comes back. In the meantime here are the pictures of the airport, meeting with the host families.
